Dientamoeba fragilis - Parasite Test

Dientamoeba fragilis
Dientamoeba fragilis, a contagious single cell parasite, infects the colon. Dientamoeba fragilis is present in more than 30% of people with chronic bowel complaints and IBS symptoms. Over the past years, hundreds of scientific publications have confirmed that infection results in many cases in specific symptoms.
Dientamoeba fragilis is internationally recognized as a harmful (pathogenic) organism.

Complaints and symptoms
Infection with Dientamoeba fragilis usually causes a variety of complaints (not always). The most common symptoms are abdominal distention and loose or sticky stool.
Other symptoms are:
Abdominal pain, particularly in children
Intestinal cramps
Unformed stools
Urgent need to defecate  or difficulty holding up the stool
Constipation (often alternating with diarrhea)
Skin problems, itching, eczema
Anal itching
In combination with these symptoms: fatigue, insomnia, nausea, headache, decreased ability to concentrate, flu-like symptoms or aching joints.

Diagnostics, qPCR
Dientamoeba fragilis was discovered a century ago, however since D.fragilis rapidly dies outside the body,  the presence of the parasite cannot be observed using standard microscopic examination methods. Diagnostic techniques to detect this parasite were only developed 12 years ago. At first the fixation/microscopy method ( the triple faeces test, TFT) was made available. Only a few years ago genetic testing was developed. The Parasiet.com laboratory uses the PCR technology, a method based on the detection of parasitic DNA. The real time PCR method detects parasitic infections 12% more often than the triple faeces test.

In case of a positive test result, treatment should always be discussed with your doctor. Medication should never be taken without the advice of a medical doctor. Treatment is not easy. Flagyl (metronidazol) has an efficacy of 50%. Clioquinol and paromomycin eliminate the parasites in 75% of cases. Since parasites are contagious, treatment is always advised. Some doctors are not familiar with the parasite and regard D.fragilis as harmless.

Since treatment is not always effective, a follow-up test to determine whether the therapy was successful should always take place. Preferably with the qPCR method.

Thank you for visiting this website. We hope that we have provided you with sufficient information and have answered your questions regarding intestinal parasites. It is our goal to contribute to the diagnosis of intestinal problems, since one in five people suffer from chronic bowel complaints. Stool exams provide a major contribution in identifying the cause of the symptoms. For many people the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS, and testing is of great value since more than 30% of IBS patients are infected with parasites.

Many doctors do not order parasitic tests, the reason is often the unfamiliarity with the subject. Many doctors assume that most people are infected in (sub) tropical regions, and are not aware that infection with parasites is no longer the specialized field of tropical medicine. Through tourism and immigration we all come into contact with intestinal parasites on a daily basis. Children are often contract a infection in kindergarten or school. The laboratory uses advanced DNA testing techniques and offers the test at the lowest possible price.
